… so that they should set their hope in God and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments (Psalm 78:7 ESV)

On of the distinctive characteristics of our school is that every class begins with prayer.  I write a daily devotional for my classes and post them online for students to read.  This serves three main purposes: First, my goal is to see students transformed by the Word of God.  That’s why I put the verse on the board and spend a few minutes reading and teaching it every day.  It’s why I post them online — so students can read them again or search them when they need encouragement.  Second, I want my devotionals to be purposeful and brief and suited for the classroom.  Writing them helps me achieve this purpose.  Finally, these devotionals serve as a model for student writing.  I aim to write well in an informal style that meshes abstract ideas with concrete examples.  I adhere to the strictest demands of academic writing, so that students can mimic these devotionals (at least the academic requirements if not the informal style) in their own writing.

If these brief devotionals help you, then praise the Lord!
