You made known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore (Psalm 16:11 ESV).
Have you ever run out of something good? As good as it may be, a milkshake won’t last. Neither will a candy bar or a good cup of coffee. Earthly pleasures are short-lived. They all run out. Even when the coffee is “good to the last drop,” the advertising slogan of Maxwell House many years ago, it has a last drop – a last good drop – before it runs out. Then it is all gone.
God’s joy never runs out. Only God gives “fullness of joy,” because only God is eternal. No other pleasure can last, because every other pleasure or happiness is temporary. Solomon, who attempted to find meaning in every form of earthly pleasure, came to this same conclusion in the book of Ecclesiastes. “All is vanity,” he writes (Ecclesiastes 1:2 ESV), and “apart from him [God] who can eat or who can have enjoyment” (2:25). Nothing can satisfy the human heart for long because nothing except God lasts forever. David says the same in Psalm 16: “in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.”
Do not look for happiness in earthly things. Enjoy the life God has given you, and do the work God has given you to do (Ecclesiastes 9:9-10). Find your contentment in the eternal and spiritual things above, not in the temporary things on earth. In God’s presence, there are “pleasures forevermore” (Psalm 16:11). That means your joy will never run out. There is no last drop because it lasts forever.
