Oh that you had paid attention to my commandments! Then your peace would have been like a river, and your righteousness like the waves of the sea; (Isaiah 48:18 ESV)
Playground fences are not intended to keep children outside. They are meant to keep children inside a safe place where they can laugh and run and play. God’s commands are like a fence to protect us from harm.
Obedience brings reward. Disobedience brings consequences. God desires our obedience to his commands because it is better for us. Just as a mother’s instruction to a young child to keep her hand off the stove when the stove is hot is meant to keep the child safe, so too do God’s instructions and commands keep us safe, healthy, and prosperous. When we choose to disobey, we step outside the fence of safety and risk the consequences of our choices. Paying attention to God’s commandments brings “peace like a river” and “righteousness like the waves of the sea.”
Do not roll your eyes at God’s commands. He knows more then you and desires your spiritual growth and fruitfulness. Stay inside the fence of God’s word where you will be protected and do not risk the dangers of living outside of God’s will. Seek the Lord’s face through prayer and reading the Bible. Learn to discern what pleases God. When you do, you will have peace like a river.
