Not Afraid of Darkness or Dangers

The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?  The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? (Psalm 27:1 ESV)

Whether we admit it or not, we are afraid of the dark – at the very least, everyone is apprehensive of darkness.  David says he has light so he is not afraid.  He also has a place of protection so he is not afraid of danger (Psalm 27:1).  God is his light and God is his protection. therefore, David is not afraid of darkness or dangers.  He has a stronghold.

David declares that God “is a stronghold for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble” (Psalm 9:9 ESV).  The Hebrew word translated stronghold can be translated as “refuge” (NIV, NEB) or “defense” (NASB).  It refers to a fortress or a place of safety and protection.  It is “a place of strength such as a mountain, a fort or a rock” (Ancient Hebrew Lexicon of the Bible).   God is a strong rock who defends and protects those who take shelter in him.  Martin Luther’s famous hymn rings true: “A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing!”

Turn to the Lord today for strength and protection.  If God is your fortress, you need not fear any attack.  Nothing can invade your territory if God defends it.  Where your strength may fail, his strength will not fail.  When your courage falters, he provides protection.  Open your heart to the Holy Spirit who gives strength, “for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control” (2 Timothy 1:7 ESV).   Your stronghold is the One who cannot be defeated.  Do not be afraid of darkness or dangers.
