Neither Silly Nor Foolish

For the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men (1 Corinthians 1:25 ESV).

A child at play often seems silly to an adult.  Yet parents, grandparents and teachers will act silly to entertain or to educate a child.  Adults will do strange things to make a child happy or to help a child learn.  They will go great lengths to entertain, and while they may act silly, no one would call a teacher or a mother foolish for acting silly.

God is not a fool, but what seems foolish to human beings is the sovereign wisdom of God.  It was God who chose to redeem humanity by sending his son Jesus to die on a cross for our sins.  Some might call that silly, foolish, simple or mysterious.  Instead it is incredible wisdom and marvelous good news for sinners who could not save themselves.  “For the foolishness of God is wiser than men,” writes the apostle.  God’s simplest thoughts are still far too complex for humans to unravel.  God is not silly.

Do not reject what God offers because it seems too simple or too strange.  Accept God’s wisdom as better than your own.  Humble yourself in the sight of the Lord.  Surrender your will to the Father’s will.  Read the Bible and pray, and ask God to show you his wisdom.  He promises to give you wisdom when you ask (James 1:5).  Do not reject what you do not understand or what you cannot comprehend.  God is wiser still.
