Let Go and Let God Handle Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow 19 June 2007

Today’s Daily Bible Verse is Matthew 6.34 (KJV):

Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.

The NET offers an excellent translation of this verse: “So then, do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Today has enough trouble of its own.” Is it not true that one day’s tasks and burdens are more than enough? Today, this day, has “enough trouble.” Why then should we add to it?

Yet we believers are often guilty of worrying about things beyond today. We sometimes think about tomorrow more than we should. We imagine, plan, and scheme how we will handle situations and conversations which probably will not even occur, but are tormenting our thoughts today. Surely this cannot please our Heavenly Father, when He has promised to care for us.

Worry and anxiety are signs of unbelief or doubt. If we trust God, we will let go of our need to control the situation; we will let go of our need to “handle it” our way. This doesn’t mean we have no responsibilities. Indeed, the Bible is clear that we must do certain things, that we must labor while it is day, that we must take responsibility. However, it does mean that we can trust the harvest to God. It means we can let Him have His way, confident in the results. (Some verses on worry and anxiety for meditation are Psalm 37.1; Psalm 56.4; Proverbs 24.19; Philippians 4.6-8; Hebrews 4.9; 1 Peter 5.7.)

Mike Murdoch said, “When you do your best, God does the rest.” Today, no matter what, do you best and let God do the rest. Let go and let God handle yesterday, today, and tomorrow. He is more than able to do it and we have more than enough troubles to handle on our own!
